The Triad of Evil
The Triad of Evil is a three-boss story arc exclusive to UO Evolution, rooted entirely in canonical Ultima Online lore. The arc takes place in the ruins beneath the mountains east of Minoc. Enter the mining caves on top of the mountain and then descend into the sink hole that leads to the Stygian Abyss. This is where the Grand Library has finally rested. This quest tasks players with confronting and destroying the three members of Ultima's most infamous villains.
The arc is self-contained and requires no formal quest activation. Players explore the ruins, encounter the bosses in sequence, and piece together the story through in-game lore items and boss dialogue. Each boss drops a unique lore item that connects the narrative and unlocks additional dialogue with the next boss.
Background Lore
The Gem of Immortality
Long before the events of the arc, the wizard Mondain converted the Sun Ruby into the Black Gem of Immortality, an artifact that made him impossible to kill and contained an exact replica of Sosaria within it. When the Avatar slew Mondain and shattered the Gem, its fragments were scattered into every corner of the world — most falling into the deepest dungeons. Three shards transformed shipwrecked sailors into the Shadowlords. The remaining shards were lost.
One shard — the eighth shard — landed in the restricted vault of the Grand Library of Britannia, where Mondain's own Black Compendium had been sealed away for centuries.
The Black Compendium
The Black Compendium is a real tome in UO canon, co-authored by Mondain, Minax, and Exodus. It contains detailed instructions on how to extend one's life through dark ritual magic. The library's archivist — a man named Valdris Aethon — was the only one with the vault's key. He sealed himself inside for three days to study the Gem fragment. He emerged changed. Forty years later, the library collapsed into the earth, and Valdris was presumed dead.
He was not dead. He had simply stopped being human.
The Connection to Minax and Exodus
The eighth shard Valdris carried was not just any fragment. Minax had privately identified it as the key to replicating the Gem of Immortality independently — something Mondain had done once and she had never been able to replicate. When Valdris died and the fragment went dark, Minax felt it across the Void and came to retrieve it.
When Minax died on UO Evolution, her second dissolution freed Exodus's Psyche — which had been wandering the Void since the destruction of the Gargish homelands. The Crystalline Ingots produced by Valdris's forty years of research were, functionally, Dark Core substrate — the same underlying magical architecture Mondain used to build Exodus. The Psyche, suddenly freed and suddenly aware of these fragments, reunited with them in the deepest chamber of the ruins. The Triad's final chapter begins.
The Arc at a Glance
| Boss | Title | Location | Difficulty | Respawn |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Valdris | Scholar of the Black Compendium | Upper ruins, east of Minoc, Grand Library in the Stygian Abyss | Hard | 6–12 hours |
| Minax | the Enchantress of Shadowguard | Ilshenar, Spectre Dungeon | Very Hard | 12–24 hours |
| Exodus | the Daemon-Machine | Deepest chamber, Exodus Dungeon | Extreme — requires full party | 24 hours |
Narrative Thread
The arc is designed to be experienced in order. Each boss drops a unique item that carries the story forward and triggers special dialogue with the next encounter.
- Kill Valdris → receive Valdris's Research Notes
- Carry the Notes to Minax → she delivers a six-line lore monologue before attacking
- Kill Minax → receive Minax's Shadowguard Research and Minax's Crystal Ring
- Kill Exodus → receive The Four Cards and the Dark Core Fragment
Players who complete all three encounters in a single session without dropping the lore items will experience the full connected narrative as intended.
Boss One: Valdris, the Archivist of Ruin
Lore
Valdris Aethon was the foremost archivist of the Grand Library of Britannia — a scholar-monk who catalogued magical phenomena for decades. When the eighth shard of Mondain's Gem of Immortality pierced the library's vault and lodged itself beside the sealed Black Compendium, Valdris was the only one with the key. He sealed himself inside for three days to study the phenomenon.
Forty years later he is still studying. He never left.
The shard and the Compendium together rewrote his body — his skin calcified into crystal, his eyes turned the colour of shattered glass, and he absorbed the entirety of the Black Compendium's forbidden knowledge into his own mind. He is half-man, half-crystallised Gem energy. He sits at his reading desk in the ruins of the collapsed library, still turning pages that no longer exist, still smiling the smile of a man who understands everything.
He will share his findings with any who visit — through the medium of their deaths.

Special Abilities
Crystal Shard Breath
Valdris exhales the energy of the Gem fragment embedded in his chest. Fires at range every 14–22 seconds. Deals 60% Cold / 40% Energy damage scaled from the target's maximum HP. The projectile appears as a platinum/white crystal beam.
Void Pages
Phase 2 only (below 66% HP). Spectral pages tear themselves from the Black Compendium and barrage up to three random players simultaneously. Deals direct Energy damage (18–35) that bypasses all resistances. Fires every 20–32 seconds.
Tome Curse
Fires at the primary target every 14–22 seconds. Drains up to 20% of the target's current mana and applies a −25 Intelligence debuff for 8 seconds, suppressing spell power and mana regeneration. Valdris comments academically on the suppression of hostile intellect.
Crystalline Touch
On every successful melee hit, there is a 25% chance to deal 8–16 additional Cold damage directly, bypassing physical resistance entirely. Contact with his crystalised body causes shard damage.
Phase System
| Phase | Trigger | Changes |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 — The Scholar | 100% – 66% HP | Standard combat. Academic taunts. Crystal Breath and Tome Curse active. |
| Phase 2 — The Compendium Opens | Below 66% HP | Void Pages barrage activates. Spawns 2 Shard Fragments. Speed increases. Acid spill on melee hits (15% chance). |
| Phase 3 — The Gem Takes Over | Below 33% HP | Crystal Storm aura activates (area Cold/Energy damage every 6 seconds). Spawns 3 more Shard Fragments. Speed maximised. 20% chance to reflect spells. Crystal Bind Dex debuff on attackers. |
Minions
Shard Fragments are summoned during Phase 2 and 3. They are not undead — they are crystallised pieces of Mondain's Gem given temporary life by Valdris's proximity to the shard.

Strategy
- Use fire damage. Valdris has only 20–30% fire resistance. Fire spells deal four to five times more damage than cold.
- Prioritise Tome Curse. The mana drain can cripple mage builds quickly. Keep mana potions readily available.
- Spread out in Phase 3. The Crystal Storm aura has a 5-tile radius. Melee fighters must rotate to avoid sustained aura damage.
- Kill Shard Fragments immediately. They deal cold and energy damage in clusters and will overwhelm a distracted party.
- Bards can assist. Valdris is not bard-immune. Peacemaking and discordance are effective.

Boss Two: Minax, the Enchantress of Shadowguard
Lore
Minax is the most dangerous human sorceress in the history of Sosaria. Her name in Latin means "threatening" or "ill-boding" — and history has proven the name prophetic. A child prodigy who had mastered telekinesis by age three, she was apprenticed to Mondain at eleven, and together they co-authored the Black Compendium.
She spent years in Castle Shadowguard — her fortress at the literal origin of time — after Mondain's death. She emerged with powers that dwarfed his entirely. She opened doors through time itself. She turned nations against one another across centuries. She was defeated only by the Stranger wielding the Quicksword Enilno — the only weapon that could harm her — and time returned to its natural course.
On UO Evolution, Minax sensed the death of the eighth Gem shard's bearer and came to retrieve it. She is not here for revenge. She is here for completion: a new Gem of Immortality, made by her, for her alone.
Special Interaction: Players carrying Valdris's Research Notes in their backpack when approaching Minax will trigger a unique six-line lore monologue before combat begins. She recognises the Notes and addresses the bearer directly. This is the only way to experience her full pre-combat dialogue

Special Abilities
Temporal Displacement
Minax's signature power. Fires every 22–38 seconds. Teleports the target (not herself) to a random location within 12 tiles. The target sees a purple particle burst at their origin and destination, hears the displacement sound, and receives a message. She occasionally comments on where in time they might land next.
Time Freeze
Fires every 18–30 seconds at the current primary target. Applies a −40 Strength and −40 Dexterity debuff simultaneously for 8 seconds. The target cannot move or swing at normal speed. Minax comments coldly: "Time. Stops. For. You."
Age Drain
On every successful melee hit there is a 35% chance to apply a −10 to −20 Strength debuff for 12 seconds, representing physical deterioration. The purple wasting visual appears at the target's head.
Passion Aura
Phase 3 only (below 30% HP). Her emotional state destabilises her magic, creating an area Cold/Energy damage aura. Fires every 6 seconds within a 6-tile radius, dealing 75% of normal area damage. Both damage types are equal (50/50 Cold/Energy).
Quicksword Memory
Phase 3 only. Every 25–45 seconds, Minax flashbacks to being killed by the Quicksword. She self-damages for 50–150 HP as the memory wound reopens, then immediately retaliates with a direct Energy damage burst (30–60) against all players within 8 tiles. Her behaviour becomes erratic.
Spell Reflection
15% chance to reflect spells back at casters in Phase 2. Increases to 30% in Phase 3 as temporal chaos interferes with spell targeting.
Phase System
| Phase | Trigger | Changes |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 — The Enchantress | 100% – 60% HP | Standard combat. Temporal Displacement and Time Freeze active. Academic, controlled taunts. |
| Phase 2 — The Time Gates Open | Below 60% HP | Spawns 2 Temporal Echoes. Spell reflection activates (15%). Speed increases. Melee hits have 15% chance to displace target (short range). |
| Phase 3 — Passion Unleashed | Below 30% HP | Passion Aura ignites. Spawns 3 more Temporal Echoes. Speed maximised. Spell reflection rises to 30%. Quicksword Memory triggers periodically. Server-wide broadcast. |
Minions
Temporal Echoes are warriors pulled through Minax's time doors from different historical eras. They are not undead — they are temporal copies, immune to bleeding and poison as they are not fully material.
| Variant | Hue | Damage Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Past Echo | 0x497 (void purple) | 70% Physical / 30% Cold | Ancient warrior era |
| Present Echo | 0x3E9 (crystal white) | 50% Physical / 50% Energy | Current age temporal copy |
| Future Echo | 0x8A4 (electric bronze) | 20% Physical / 80% Energy | Unknown future era — highest energy output |
All variants use Body 26 (Wraith), have 300–500 HP, and deal 12–22 damage.
Strategy
- Fire damage is essential. With only 10–20% fire resistance, Minax takes massive damage from fire spells. Flamestrike, Fireball, and fire-element weapons are the recommended tools. A fire mage can solo this fight faster than any other build.
- Prepare for Temporal Displacement. Keep cure and heal potions in your immediate hotbar. The displacement will not kill you alone but it repositions you away from healers. Communicate your location immediately after displacement.
- Counter Time Freeze with Dexterity items. The 40-point Dex drain is significant. High-dex players feel it less. Refresh potions and Stam regen items help recovery.
- During Phase 3, spread to 6+ tiles. The Passion Aura is centered on Minax. Ranged fighters and mages maintain distance. Melee players must rotate in and out.
- Bards cannot calm her (Uncalmable) but she can be discorded. Discord significantly reduces her resistances and skill values.
- Watch for Quicksword Memory. The 8-tile energy burst in Phase 3 has no warning other than her dialogue line. When she mentions the Quicksword, back away immediately.

Boss Three: Exodus, the Daemon-Machine
Lore
Exodus is the last and greatest of the Triad of Evil — the creation of Mondain and Minax, "neither human nor machine." It is comprised of two components: the Psyche (the daemon half — consciousness and personality) and the Dark Core (the machine half — accumulated knowledge stored in a hard-drive-like device). Together they form a single sapient entity of extraordinary capability.
After its first defeat by the Stranger — deactivated by the insertion of the Four Cards in the correct sequence — the Psyche wandered the Void while the Dark Core remained sealed in the sunken Castle of Fire. When Minax died on UO Evolution, her dissolution freed the Psyche at exactly the moment the Crystalline Ingots from Valdris's research were present on the material plane. Both halves of Exodus, for the first time since the Avatar's intervention, occupied the same location simultaneously.
The reunion happens in the deepest chamber of the ruins. Players find not a monster but a machine — assembled from crystalline material and daemon-fire, visually distinct from every other creature in the arc. It has had decades to think about what it wants to do next.

The Four Cards Mechanic
In the original Ultima III, Exodus could not be killed by force alone. The Stranger defeated it by inserting the Four Cards — Sol, Moons, Love, and Death — into its machine housing in the correct sequence. This mechanic is faithfully recreated on UO Evolution.
During Phase 3 (below 40% HP), Exodus activates a 250 HP/3 second self-repair cycle. Raw damage output cannot outpace this regeneration. To stop it, players must "activate" each of the Four Cards by dealing sufficient damage of the corresponding elemental type:
| Card | Element Required | Threshold | Effect When Activated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card of Sol | Fire damage | 1,000 cumulative fire damage | Fire resistance drops to 15%. Server-wide broadcast. |
| Card of Moons | Cold damage | 1,000 cumulative cold damage | Cold resistance drops to 15%. Server-wide broadcast. |
| Card of Love | Physical damage | 1,000 cumulative physical damage | Physical resistance drops to 20%. Server-wide broadcast. |
| Card of Death | Energy damage | 1,000 cumulative energy damage | Energy resistance drops to 15%. Server-wide broadcast. |
When all four cards are activated:
- The self-repair cycle permanently stops
- All four resistances drop simultaneously
- Exodus acknowledges the activation in dialogue
- The server broadcasts that Exodus is now vulnerable
The Four Cards mechanic rewards players who know UO lore. Groups that use a diverse mix of damage types — fire mage, cold mage, physical melee, energy weapon or spell — will activate all four cards naturally. Groups relying on a single damage type will find Phase 3 nearly impossible
Special Abilities
Dark Core Pulse
Fires every 18–30 seconds. A machine electromagnetic pulse expands in an 8-tile radius around Exodus. All affected players lose 25% of their current mana and receive a −30 Intelligence debuff for 6 seconds, suppressing spell damage and mana regeneration. The visual is an expanding orange ring of machine energy.
This ability specifically counters mage-heavy groups. Maintain mana potions and intelligence-boosting items.
Corrupted Data
Fires every 25–40 seconds at the primary target. Exodus analyses the target's highest stat (Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence — whichever is highest) and applies a −35 debuff to that specific stat for 10 seconds. The machine always targets your greatest strength. Exodus comments analytically: «Your [stat] is... suboptimal. Correcting.»
Precision Strike
On every successful melee hit there is a 30% chance for an additional strike dealing 15–30 damage split Fire/Energy that bypasses armor. Represented as a machine-calculated strike that finds gaps in defence.
Phase System
| Phase | Trigger | Changes |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 — Diligence Incarnate | 100% – 70% HP | Standard combat. Dark Core Pulse and Corrupted Data active. Measured, analytical taunts. Awakening monologue plays on spawn. |
| Phase 2 — The Dark Core Awakens | Below 70% HP | Area Fire/Energy damage aura activates. Spawns 2 Dark Core Servitors. Periodic additional servitor spawns every 45–90 seconds. |
| Phase 3 — The Four Cards | Below 40% HP | Self-repair cycle activates (250 HP/3 seconds). Spawns 3 more Servitors. Earth Serpent Echo summoned. Four Cards mechanic must be completed to stop regeneration. Server-wide broadcast. |
| Phase 4 — Reunification Fails | Below 15% HP OR all cards activated | Maximum speed. Damage increases to 30–50. The Psyche and Dark Core fight each other. Erratic, desperate dialogue. Final frenzy. |
Minions
Dark Core Servitors
Mechanical constructs assembled by Exodus from daemon-fire and crystalline material. Body 14 (Earth Elemental), machine-orange hue.
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Hit Points | 600 – 1,000 |
| Damage | 14 – 24 (Fire/Energy) |
| Fire Resistance | 60 – 75% |
| Cold Resistance | 60 – 75% |
| Poison Resistance | 100% (immune) |
| Special Drop | Crystalline Ingot (15% chance, 2–5) |
Earth Serpent Echo
Summoned once during Phase 3. In canonical lore, Exodus enslaved the Great Earth Serpent and ripped it from the Void to guard the Isle of Fire. This is the ghost of that enslaved creature, answering one final call.
The Earth Serpent Echo is a temporary minion — it dissolves back into the Void after 90 seconds regardless of how much HP it has remaining. Killing it before 90 seconds drops minimal loot. The priority is always Exodus
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Body | 21 (Giant Snake) |
| Hue | 0x497 (Void Purple — it is a ghost) |
| Hit Points | 3,000 – 5,000 |
| Damage | 20 – 35 (Cold/Energy) |
| Has Breath | Yes — 60% Cold / 40% Energy |
| Bard Immune | Yes |
| Duration | 90 seconds, then dissolves |
Strategy
General
- Bring a full party. Exodus requires 5–8 active players to manage simultaneously: the boss, the servitors, the Earth Serpent Echo, the Dark Core Pulse mana drain, and the Four Cards activation.
- Assign damage roles before the fight. Designate at least one player responsible for each damage type: fire, cold, physical, energy. This ensures all Four Cards activate efficiently in Phase 3.
- Mana management is critical. The Dark Core Pulse will drain 25% of your mana every 18–30 seconds. Greater Mana Potions and Meditation items are essential. Mana Regen equipment should be prioritised for the mage roles.
Phase-by-Phase
Phase 1: Straightforward combat. Conserve mana and learn the Corrupted Data pattern. Note which of your stats it targets and adjust accordingly.
Phase 2: When servitors spawn, one tank should break off to engage them. Do not allow them to swarm healers. The area aura becomes active — spread to 5+ tiles.
Phase 3: This is the fight. The moment Phase 3 triggers, each designated player begins concentrating their assigned damage type. Watch the server broadcast messages — they confirm when each card activates. The Earth Serpent Echo should be briefly tanked by the most durable player while the group continues on Exodus. Do not chase the serpent — it dissolves on its own.
Phase 4: When Exodus reaches Phase 4 (either via low HP or all cards activated), finish it quickly. Its damage spikes to 30–50 and it moves at maximum speed. This is the most dangerous phase for melee fighters.
Class-Specific Tips
| Class | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fire Mage | Sol Card + primary DPS | Flamestrike and Fireball are the best fire sources. This is the highest-value role. |
| Cold Mage | Moons Card activation | Ice Strike and cold-element spells. Also useful for the Earth Serpent Echo (fire weakness). |
| Physical Warrior | Love Card + tank | Standard melee on Exodus. Also tanks servitors and the Earth Serpent. |
| Energy Caster / Mage | Death Card activation | Lightning and energy spells. Also helps manage Dark Core Pulse by staying mobile. |
| Healer | Party sustain | Stay outside the 8-tile Dark Core Pulse radius when possible. Call out mana levels after each pulse. |
| Bard | Discord on Exodus | Cannot provoke (Unprovokable), cannot calm (Uncalmable). Discord reduces skills and resistances — use it. |

Unique Items of the Arc
Valdris's Research Notes
A blessed lore book dropped 100% by Valdris. Displays Valdris's journal entries in the item property tooltip, progressing from day 1 (curious) through day 14 (completely consumed). Carrying this item when approaching Minax triggers her unique pre-combat lore monologue. Do not discard this item before killing Minax.
Crystalline Ingot
A stackable crafting resource dropped by all three bosses and their minions. Forged from fragments of Mondain's shattered Gem of Immortality — solidified Gem energy that has been shaped by forty years inside Valdris's crystalline body. Used in advanced alloy and enchantment recipes. Drops in increasing quantities across the arc (Valdris 5–15 → Minax 10–25 → Exodus 25–50).
Minax's Crystal Ring
Referenced in the UO artifact tome Artifacts of Darkness as "an item of note." This is its first physical realisation in any Ultima Online shard. A blessed ring dropped 100% by Minax.
Properties:
- Spell Damage +20
- Cast Speed +1
- Cast Recovery +2
- Mana Regeneration +5
- Lower Mana Cost 10%
- Luck +150
- Physical Resist +5
- Cold Resist +15
- Energy Resist +15
The Four Cards
The Sol, Moons, Love, and Death cards used to defeat Exodus in the original Ultima III. Collecting all four forms a complete set — a permanent record that the bearer was present for the destruction of Exodus on UO Evolution. Each card is blessed and displays lore text referencing the Third Age of Darkness.
Dark Core Fragment (Weapon)
A unique one-handed slashing weapon created from Exodus's machine consciousness. The highest-stat weapon produced by the Triad arc.
Properties:
- Weapon Damage +40
- Attack Chance +20
- Defend Chance +15
- Weapon Speed +20
- Luck +200
- Mana Regeneration +5
- Hit Leech Mana 30%
- Hit Leech Hits 20%
- Hit Dispel 25%
- Hit Lower Defend 20%
- Hit Energy Area 15%
Arc Completion
When Exodus dies, the following server-wide message is broadcast to all players:
- [PlayerName] has destroyed Exodus, the Daemon-Machine! The Triad of Evil — Mondain, Minax, and Exodus — is finally broken. The Dark Core is silent. The Isle of Fire will not rise again.
Five seconds later, a second message closes the story:
- The ruins of Valdris's library have collapsed completely. The eighth Gem shard is dust. The age of the Triad is over.
The arc has no formal completion reward beyond the loot. The narrative and the collectible items — the Notes, the Ring, the Four Cards, the Dark Core Fragment — are the reward. Players who complete all three fights in a single session and keep the lore items have a permanent record of their role in ending the Triad's final chapter on UO Evolution.
Trivia
- Valdris Aethon is an original character created for UO Evolution. His name and history are exclusive to this shard.
- Minax is one of the three original Ultima villains alongside Mondain and Exodus. Her name is Latin for "threatening" or "ill-boding." Her quote to the Avatar — «A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero only one» — is attributed to Shakespeare's Julius Caesar in the original Ultima II.
- Exodus cannot be directly killed by force alone in canonical Ultima III lore. The Four Cards mechanic on UO Evolution faithfully recreates this. A party that ignores elemental diversity in Phase 3 will find the fight nearly impossible.
- The Crystalline Ingots that connect all three bosses are the same magical substrate that Mondain used to construct Exodus's Dark Core. Valdris spent forty years accidentally reconstructing the architecture of Exodus's machine half from first principles.
- Minax's Crystal Ring is referenced in the UO artifact tome Artifacts of Darkness and appears physically in-game for the first time anywhere on this shard.
- The Earth Serpent in the Exodus fight references the Great Earth Serpent, which Exodus enslaved from the Void to guard the Isle of Fire in Ultima III. Powerful enough to snatch the Serpent from the Void, Exodus's dominion over it extended even to this ghost of the creature.
- Body 768 (Juggernaut) was chosen for Exodus because it visually represents a half-machine, half-human form — the most literal visual interpretation of "neither human nor machine" available on UO Evolution.
