Hello my Fellow Tamers,

I am back after 18 months and things look great.  I want to focus on taming and breeding.  I have several level 1/ 27,28,29, 30 critters (GDs, CUs, Hiyrus, Rune Beetles, Dragons) shrunk in boxes, with weak to gifted DNA, but many with only 1 breed left.  I have 2 accounts (Bob the Breeder and Stinky Pete)

Welcome back!  The weak dna pets can be released, they are not worth breeding.  Try and find high level pets with top dna (see the wiki)

So a few comments/questions:

I think I need to max out luck.  Right now both tamers have about 1100 luck with what I've been able to cobble together - is this high enough for those '1 breed left' nail biters?  If not, anyone want to help a fella(s) out?

Better luck = better results, 1100 is considered very low luck

Training: What is the best way to go with a new critter? - train stats at training room, then sequence up the mob tree?  Where would you start and where do you train at the higher end?

There are so many spots and mobs, but yes, start easy and work your way up.  players are nice and they can show you around to the hot spots.  Also look in the rune library

What do ppl do with all those sterile pets?  Last time, I tried selling on a vendor, but that didn't seem to work out - not enough business to keep it solvent.

Use them as "meat shields" on the hard mobs, let them take the damage and stat loss.  After they are destroyed, bring out the good pets to finish the job

Where would you hunt with this guy: GD lvl 40, 1800hp, 1200 str, 300 dex, 927 Int?  I don't do well in high volume, multi-mob situations (fat fingers)

I know maximizing all of this will take lots of gold.  As I am training/grinding the pets up, do you go with easier/more mobs (like say endless Shame lvl 1 runs) or harder/less mobs slower spawn (like Abyss Wyrvens spot)?

What are people hunting with these days? - used to be GDs, then Ancient Fire Steeds.  I always liked rune beetles and hyirus.

Greater Dragons and the Ancient Fire steeds are top choices to begin with.  There are also some top rare bets to find.  See the wiki for all pets and descriptions...lots of options

My Goal, breed several strains of popular hunters to get 1/40 babies with DNA on the better end of the scale.  Then share with other tamers, or sell.  Then tackle the Evo Dragon quests and Bio-engineering, but hey one obsession at a time.

Yes, the bio system is fun.  Make sure you read the wiki details as to not make costly mistakes

Stinky Pete and Bob the Breeder, Thank you.

Yes, I have read these.  I'm looking for anecdotal experience and recommendations.

Thanks for the awesome, and detailed reply.

One clarification.

With a new lvl 1 pet, would/should I train up stats at the training room before taking them to grind levels on mobs?  I seem to recall that was a strategy, but I can't remember the details.

If it is all just level dependent, then I can just start grinding...right?

Yes, again, I have read the reference material.  I am asking if a new pet starts with the highest strength it will ever have, do you train it up, or do you have to assign points to it.

What about skills - does the pet start with their max magery or do I have to train from a low number to a higher number; or assign points.

I know I can just breed one and figure it out, but I am asking so i can plan better.

You can train pets up to 150 of each stats, it wont grow above that. Skill can be trained up to 100 unless a powerscroll had been used before.
I'm also new to breeding so i would like to ask how skills affect breeding and if skills are more important than luck?

Hello everyone!  Sorry I'm so late to this post, I would've loved to get to it earlier.

This is my post from about 2 years ago, I'd say 99% of it still applies. There's much more to learn too!

Breeding tips:
1. In the first few generations, if you are short pet skill points you can save some points by making the combined parent resistances/health odd.  Example. Male - 75 physical, Female 74 Physical, baby will have 74.5, rounded up to 75!
2. Some stats can train pretty high just by fighting.  I got my CuSide to str-630 dex-128 int-162 just by afk fighting training elementals.  The babies will come out with higher stats as well, and less points you'll have to spend in the future.
3. Save your points for armor and resists (level 10 unlock and level 20 unlock)! Your pets will take a lot less damage, allowing you to fight harder monsters.
4. According to patch notes, chance to breed depends on animal lore, taming, and luck, augmented by pet generation.  So wear your full taming suit when breeding.
5. With some higher level pets, you will fail, a LOT. Just keep at it.
6. Remember, a greater dragon with high health and worse DNA is better for breeding than a low hp GD with good DNA, as you don't have to dump 200-300 points into HP.
7. If the pet isn't too rare, save your +1 pet level deeds.
8. At the same time, if a rare 4 breed pet has good DNA, it might be worth getting it up to higher levels with level deeds to breed them!

Taming tips:
1. Use Spellweaving spell, Ethereal Voyage on monsters that fight back.  Walk off screen, invis, cast EthV, run back and spam tame pet with your taming gear equipped, with a 6 strength Spellweaving focus, you'll have plenty of time to tame it.
2. You can tame CuSide's fairly easy by putting a 1 slot animal between yourself and the cu in a tight corridor.  The cu won't be able to go through you, and you can tame through the docile pet.
3. If something is too hard, you can always ask a friend to come with you and heal you nonstop while peacemaking the pet.

Pet Leveling tips:
1. High hp mobs that are easy to kill give a ton of xp. eg. rotting corpses, gauntlet bosses, etc.
2. Once you hit 10, raise your resists!
3. Once you hit 30, max out your armor!
4. If you are training an AFS or a regular fire steed, you can cast corpse skin on monsters to lower their fire resist, increasing pet damage both from melee attack and their FIRE BREATH (yes it exists)!
5. Discordance lowers resist as well.
6. If you have a weak pet, you can just have the pet hit any monster once, and kill it yourself and your pet will get the xp.
7. Wrong dungeon trammel has the best spawns to kill for leveling pets. There are two locations, one east and one west side of the first level. The juka jailers and red troll give about 10-25k xp per kill. They die pretty fast but what makes it the best pet leveling area is they re-spawn almost instantly. Contributed by Blackmamba and verified! Great xp, mobs don't hit too hard but they run, so prepare to chase them.

I don't think there's much info disclosed to the players on this.  I basically wear a fairly cheap suit (by uoe standards) of 170 taming/170 lore 1600 luck to breed, and I'd say I average ~2 breeds (and yes I get sterile and 4s, but average is 2) and a sloping scale of lots of weak to some perfect critters.

I am asking if a new pet starts with the highest strength it will ever have, do you train it up, or do you have to assign points to it.

What about skills - does the pet start with their max magery or do I have to train from a low number to a higher number; or assign points.
It varies from pet to pet, but most pets can gain stats while training. Example, I've seen my cu gain dex and str while leveling, only 5-10 points in each.  I've never seen my AFSs gain stats (that doesn't mean it hasn't happened, just an observation).

Any skill below 100 will train to 100 (except rune beetles are currently a little bugged****)
Greater Dragons, rune bettles, and some other pets lose 30% of their skill when tamed, and you can regain up to 27% of those skill.  Example: if you find a 145 wrestling GD, once tamed, he'll be at 101.5, and you can retrain him back to 140.6.

Alternatively, breeding 2GDs and hoping for a high skill is the only way to not 'lose' the 3%.

Anatomy always starts at 0, and only goes to 100 unless using a pet power scroll, acquired from doing taming bulk order deeds.

My brief "should I tame guide" to myself.

Thank you all for the detailed responses.

I have 120 taming, 115 lore, 115 vet and a luck suit of about 1100.  still feels sub-par.

Also, what are people hunting with these days? I always like Cu's and Rune Beetles.  Where do ppl use better pets?  I recall pets are not great at Champ spawns.  Any place really good.  Some of the new mobs are kicking my butt, even with a GD pet.  Seems like many spawns got harder - Ilish!

If you do not keep notes on pet stats, is there a way to tell if they suffered stat loss?  I know my pets have died, but I didn't write any stats down beforehand, so just numbers to me.

Is DNA strength inluenced by the parents DNA level or is is random based on breeder?

That's it for now.  I'm sure there will be more.

I have several beetles, Cus and GDs ready to breed if someone wants to show me the ropes.

Cheers.
