I love this idea. Although I would like to suggest that instead of starting naked... have each contestant prepped by staff prior to the event with same starting gear we were given as new players... basic suit of armor (all identical) but hued with colors that represent their District (guild)
As for commentating, x-number of players be frozen and hidden by GM's in predetermined positions withing the arena's bounds (perhaps an island) so they could give voice updates on EV/UO's teamspeak as the contestants pass by them or fight near them.
As for how the contestants are chosen... easy... everyone from their "District" is assigned a ticket and if chosen you participate (GM lotto draw).. Leaves an element of surprise and would largely randomize the playing field. (Obviously only those willing to participate would enter into the drawing)
