From the Wiki:

"If you are selling items, you may use the trade channel [tr to send one message per half hour. Make sure the message is unique and typed, not an automated macro"

This morning I wake up to a char named Sub-Zero auto spamming the trade channel.  Other players also have trade macros running.  Please enforce this rule.  The lag from this trade  stuff makes the shard unplayable at times.

I have a suggestion, why not use mirc chat for trade and things like trivia, most of us has used it before, alternatively why not make a trade channel on ts, u don't have to actually talk in ts there is a type box there to use aswell, tx

Yes, I agree trade channel should be used for trades. And the timer should be inforced, sadly, I began to feel like a broken record, so I shut up about it , when trying to get ppl to stop using [c for [tr.

Shena, I love you, so dont kill me, but I think it should stay ingame, & heres why.

We are trying to recruit new ppl as well as keeping the Vets interested.  New ppl have a pretty hard time "getting up to speed" & miss alot of info on our wiki/forums (Yes, I strongly encourage everyone to read it, I even has a macro for it).  If/when they see these activities in-game, it makes them feel more included, ie trivia.

I, for one, must limit the amount of programs I run on my pc (its dying). I notice quite a few others struggling with crashes, which "could" be an indication of a old pc.  Ive also had ppl say outright, they are running on an old pc; so forcing others to use other programs to just play a game they are using to relax on seems counter intuitive.

Yeah I saw this latest problem this morning as well. I agree that it should remain in game, but the rules need to be enforced and with teeth. First offence is a 1 day suspension, 2nd is a week, 3rd is a month and 4th is a banning. I don't know how best to monitor/police this, but I am sure there are multiple ways.

I suspect that Sub-Zero just set their macro up with the wrong pause and did not intend to spam like they were. A 1 day suspension would solve for that, it enforces the rule and you learn the lesson and triple check your macro.

This assumes macro selling is allowed to continue. I personally feel you should be in game and active to use the trade channel. And I also feel you should have to type (or CTRL+Q) to repeat your message. When I use the trade channel I do not repeat myself more than every 15 minutes and have never had a problem buying or selling that way.

Unattended trades should use the forums if you ask me.

hi hi

I wasnt on when zero was doing this.  Was it a run-a-way macro? Ive witnessed a few of those, Im not sure how/why it happens, but It seems to be those who use steam(UOA) that have it occur.

Domino, herself had it happen (it crashed the server btw). There is little a player can do other then log off & reboot UO. Sadly, the data/commands have already been sent to the sever so the server will continue to display the spam until the data received has been completed (or Kane cuts it off).

I myself use [tr macro on an alt to sell my wares.  I am usually hunting so I kill [tr on Sage to cut down on data transfers between client/server & to not cause undue lag with/for the sever or myself.  I do 2 diff accounts for a few reasons, 1, I am ALWAYS talking to others, and time has a way of becoming distorted, so I use a timer run macro of 30 mins on the other account, so as to not overly spam the server, or others.  2nd reason: If Im not talking, Im tryin to hunt, and spam keeps me from seeing ANYTHING.  I check my alt account pretty regularly (every 15-20 mins), but well, I do loose track of time.

I am no saint, not by a long shot, but I think anything can be done in moderation.  I dont support ppl who go away for the day, running a macro, and never checkin thier mail, or replying to questions in open chat, but even I miss things in chat, and I play with my journal up! LOL

Im game for "squelching" players who are asked to stop using [c for buy/sell & for ppl who overuse the [tr channel when asked/reminded to follow the rules. But squelching seems prudent here, perhaps 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours then banning.  Outright denying game-play can make us appear overly authoritarian, and 1 thing EVO has over many severs is the sense of community, friendliness & social justice & responsibility.

Sage

I second this and would add this, enforce language control, some players have a foul mouth, and its getting worst.

I am guilty of having a foul mouth, especially when I'm winding down, and have had a few too many to drink (happens nearly every night I play), but I do NOT let a few choice words fly over public [c chat.  If I do let some adult language pass, it's in the company of those I know, and who will not be easily offended.

Good call though Thorgal, some of us need to keep in mind that not everyone who plays this shard are adult, and not everyone has the same vocabulary.

I have a modest poopie mouth, some I do for role play, others I slip and forget myself.  Sadly, any poopie word is considered a swear, when someones in a bad mood or hypersensitive.  We do have a "Obscenity Filter" build right in to UO, its under options, right side, bottom tab.  No, I dont condone swearing, but I am human, so I cant stand on a soapbox about the subject.  If my poopie mouth bother you, please, add me to ignore thru the same means, youll not even see my name ingame.  There is also the ignore feature in [c, just find the persons name on the list & hit the "i", poof done, then youll never see ugly words from ugly people again, even me.

I agree with Sagemoon on this topic. Personally, I feel that there is really no excuse to let fly off the handle over any public channel. I know mistakes and accidents happen, but I am not talking about that. If a player is so angry that they just can not control themselves in a global setting then maybe they should get up and walk away for a bit. After all, its just a game.

As for the cursing and foul language in game, I attempt to keep it to a minimum. I think the overuse of foul language makes me seem unintelligent and devoid of meaningful conversation. That's not meant to insult other players, mind you, it's just the standard I hold myself too. Now, keeping everything I said prior in mind, I do feel that since the game has a language filter built into it that its not staffs responsibility to police normal in game chat. It's the parent's responsibility.

That's the nature of online gameplay I'm afraid. Your opinions and values stop where the other persons begins. If that's too big of an issue for some people then they probably shouldn't let their children play online. Nintendo has an excellent catologue that is easily 95% family friendly, of which, I am sure they will find a more than adequate supply of games. Lord knows I wouldn't let my youngest children play Ultima Online, but my teenager? You should count yourselves thankful that I don't unleash her upon this world.
