I started working on my cooking skill last night.

I had been warned before hand that it would use all the materials in one use before hand, meaning 100 raw fish steaks all cooked at the same time and only one chance for a little skill gain.  I tested it expecting these results and it did happen as I was warned it would.
I then broke a stack of raw fish steaks into single pieces and again it used all the materials, even the raw fish steaks from packs other than the main bag.

One chance at a small gain in skill level, used over 400 fish steaks  testing last night. All with the cooking skill using all available materials at one time, with only a small gain in skill instead of massive gains as it was making 100+ items at a time.

Was told afterwards it has all ways been done like this, including on other servers.  Also that I would need a macro to make single items and level my cooking correctly.

My main question is why does it work this way when the other crafting professions will only make a single item, imagine all of your metal ingots or wood used when crafting.  So other crafting professions work correctly, yet cooking does not.

Can the Cooking skill be fixed so that it behaves to way other professions do with their resource usage?

The simplest answer, to your question, is to put the opposite of your question into play.

"Why can I only cook one raw steak at a time, this needs to be fixed since it takes me forever to make 100 cooked steaks. "

Cooking is working the way other crafting skills work, but on a much larger scale. Cooking them all at the same time helps a GM cook do what they wanted to do-- when they set out to GM cooking. Cook anything and everything on a massive scale.

I suggest the following to raise cooking:                (because I don't think anything is broken-- so why fix it?)

    1. Build a customize able house, buy/craft a stove deed; than place the stove in the house.

    2. Buy a pack animal or two.   (I suggest bonding the pack animal-- but its not needed-- depending on what MoB's spawn nearby)
    3. Feed you pack animal, then command it to stay. Do this near the stove.

    4. Place cooking materials into the Pack animals back pack.

5 Create Macro to pull out 1 to 3 cookable items-- into your main pack-- then attempt to cook them.

    6.  Set a pause for skill delays. Set macro to loop. Start macro to test.

This should work. Depends on the set up and delays between cooking items. Most third party programs can make a decent macro like this.

The only other way to do this is to take one item from the pack animal, manually and cook it. Then repeat over and over until your GM cooking.
