Topic :   What do you do for a living?
12 years ago  September 28, 2012, 09:21:22 PM

I mostly created this post because of very little off topics. When I was looking for a shard I checked out the forum and the wiki, the wiki was good but the forum some times had posts and somtimes didn't. So I know some new players do that so heres a random discussion.

What do you do for a living?

Me? I'm a full time student in high school hoping to become a petroleum Engineer one day!

I deal with the propellers only but the business I work at also has a department of machinest that deal with the shafts and anything related to them.  As far was with the props we deal with both repairs and new castings.  We make sure the propellers are balanced, pitched correctly, tracking with tolerance, free of cracks and other determental effects.  Repairs arent too bad unless the blades are bang to hell and back *we have repaired props where the blade actually curled back to the hub), but new castings can be a serious pain.  All the props we work on are Types of Bronze or Stainless and  weigh up to 10 tons or so,  Fun stuff

Not sure about the fun but it sure can be back breaking some days. The salt water isnt to bad to the props btw, our company and I assume most that deal with new castings have a specific blend of stainless that is poured for the castings to help minimize the effects of salt water on the prop.  When you deal with a finished product though it is satisfying.  In a way we are artist with the metal, least that is what our boss calls us.  :D

ahah. i see sounds like an interesting job. i wish they made trucks with some sort of chemical so the salt does not have a great effect on them. everything on a truck is 9times out of 10 seized.... and oxy acetylene torch  only fits in areas large enough to allow them to. but then again if it was a horrible trade i wouldn't have picked it  for a career.

I was a bastard child of Special Operations for 6 years. These days I get my kicks in the deregulated energy and precious metals market. You guys are all hard workers, but I think Cookie takes the cake. I don't know how she does it!

i work..... - wait for it -........ in IT!
i'm a sysadmin at a university (industrial tech).
Actually i would be lying my arse off if i said i 'work'.
Perhaps i'm just a great sysadmin, but most of my day is spent.... well playing UO :p
except on fridays then i have meetings /shootme.

On the side, i'm a musician. Semi-pro. Most of my nights (that's daytime for you US chaps) are spent rehearsing or doing shows.
I play drums. Since about a year i'm in a new band, and if we make across the ocean i'll post tourdates so you can get VIP access ;)
We play a mix of stonerrock and 70tiz power style rock. Think zeppelin, MC5, sabbath with a bit of Hendrickx.

I'm a stay at home mom! Not totally by choice. But one I've been happy to do for several years now.  Mom to 3 but only 2 are left home.
Prior to this I was a Restaurant General Manager, which I left for a "part time job" driving school bus. That was a joke. I worked just as many if not more than 70 hours a week.  I even turned down a great bank job for the fewer hours the driving offered... Loved driving the bus though. Met some really great kids (some nasty ones too) and some amazing teachers.  I drove 6 years ago, and some of my old students still remember me hehe.  Most remember me as the "Cool gamer" since I'd chat with them about their gaming and interests.

My kids were/are my job though. (brag a little). My oldest who is 20 is a Nanny for a wealthy family in Texas.  Next is my 17 year old who is in Honor Society, straight A student and a music whiz. My son is 13 a very active gamer loves sports ( Red Skins fan yuck,barf..) showing signs of maybe being a Chef one day.

For a living...  This is where I typically lie to people who are cutting my hair and such.

I work for Texas Instruments as a Process Technician.  While we are making the computer chips that go into your cars and just about every other electronic device stuff goes wrong.  When it does it is my job to go in and try and fix the production material so it is still sell-able.  I work 12 hour night shifts on a compressed work week.  I get 3 and 4 days off every week alternating.

I recently have started back to college to try and upgrade my 2 year degree into a 4 year degree.  This is a process I expect to spend years working on.

If I am not at work or at the gun range (fairly avid shooter) I am online playing an MMO.  Being completely single (and no kids) this cycle seldom gets broken.

I’ve done a few things in my life:

  • Twenty years in the US Army (Administration, Logistics and Infantry).
  • Five years in IT at a manufacturing company.  They were still using manual typewriters when they hired me.
  • Two years as an Accountant for a Not for Profit Housing Authority.
  • Four years as a college student.
  • Five years as a business owner.  Photography business called Emerging Perspectives.
  • Six years as an Office Manager and Volunteer Coordinator for Oxfam Australia.
Now I’m living off my military retirement and doing some volunteer work.

In game my main character is Rhukor.

I work Logistics at Target, trying to get into management there.

I would probably have an awesome job like one of the posts above me, except I played way to much UO in my youth, and I don't have ovaries.  8)

  My job is rather enjoyable.
