I am fairly new to this shard, and have not really played UO in ages. I have a few questions about going mostly pure mage so I figured I would come here instead of spam in game chat to get an answer.

Thank in advance for any help.

1) Assuming 350 stats would I lock str at 100, dex/int at 125, or is there a better combo?
***Learned the hard cap on stats was 150. Will modify stats depending on + from gear.

2) I know I should be pumping Eval > Magery on everything when possible, but when it comes to jewels/stats on equipment would it be better to go with +Int and SDI (PVM), or is eval/magery still better than pure int?
***Mainly looking at the evolution ring as I am leveling it, but have no clue what to put my stats in currently**
3) Is Magery viable in a PvM setting or is it geared more towards PvP?
4) What type of weapon should I be going for in a PvM aspect (I assume crafted double axe/yumi bow), and in a PvP aspect?
5) Is it worth getting Spellweaving, Cleric/Druid Spellbooks for PvM, and on a lesser note, PvP?
6) What are the most important 120 PS to get first other than taming/lore/eval/magery?

Will add questions as they come to me.

I was going to post a long winded point of view on the PvE mage, but if you are new; i first suggest finding someone who uses magery as their primary and seeing what they do.

There is so much in game at the moment, and soon to come--constantly changing too-- its just to hard to know which to go for first.

You should level stats and skills up to 100... all of them. Find areas to make gold that suit your abilities, and figure all the rest out piece-mail.  When you get stuck say a month from now, ask again. You will have a smaller list of questions, IMO, and will get smaller bits of information which will help you long, versus short, term.

Hope that helps a little; sorry I got a headache during the middle of this post, or I would have covered more.

I primarily run as a mage in pvm and would love to share a little insight. Especially since I don't see anyone else doing it.

One thing you'll want to invest in is a set of slayer spellbooks and a kokiri knife. the kokiri knife can be gotten from the corpse of the kokiri (blue named dryad). In order to get it you'll head SW out of new haven and then SE to the passes in the mountain. It'll be waiting and has dropped it 100% for me. I just tested it to be sure. The Kokiri has 50% spell damage increase on it. As for the slayer spell books, they can be crafted normally, but craft necromancy or mysticism spellbooks as they are easier to craft.

As for tactics with a mage. Having an eval suit is nice, but I also recommend a spirit speak suit as well. Allow me to elaborate. Against hordes of lesser monsters you'll want to cast the necro spell wither. You'll need spirit speak and your kokiri for the best effect there. Against single monsters you'll want to target their lowest defense. If its cold or energy you'll want to curse them first and then spam your spell of choice. For cold monsters I like harm due to its high damage and speed. For energy I prefer lightning. Energy bolt is also nice but I get better dps from lightning.

For creatures weak against fire, you'll want to corpse skin them. The effect is much greater than curse. I suppose fireball would be better dps than flamestrike but I really like casting flamestrike :) For creatures weak against poison you'll want to use your spirit speak suit. Once again corpse skin but this time use poison strike. Its a very heavy hitter and highly under-rated.

Things worth noting:
You'll also be using wraith form alot since it regains mana based off your damage dealt. This is incredibly useful on a mage.

Slayer spellbooks increase damage by 100% but only for targeted magery spells. It will not help with damage when casting earthquake. Nor will it work with wither or poison strike. Your kokiri will come in handy during these instances. A slayer necro book wont help necro spells, just magery.

There is no spell damage increase cap in pvm. So stack sdi as hard as possible when not pumping skill.

Runuo is not 100% accurate to osi, some spells don't work properly. Keep that in mind when testing things. A general rule in runuo is if its beneficial magery boosts its effect. If its detrimental then eval boosts its effect. Thats not an accurate statement on osi, but on runuo it is.

I keep a 100% physical composite bow on me as well. If I find a monster weak against physical I use that. If i find a monster weak against nothing then i use its armor ignore ability.

In the event that a monster is too strong to get close to but weak against cold, mind blast also does cold damage.

As for powerscrolls I would recommend spirit speak and animal lore first. You'll be loring monsters alot to determine resists. Spirit speak is a guaranteed room clearer as well. Its extremely hard to ignore.

As for anything else, I concur with Sturger. Wait a month and ask us again. We'll be here. But hey, this will get you a good start :)
