DISCLAIMER: I am a complete Ultima newbie! I had never heard of the series until maybe a year ago and this is the first time EVER that I'm playing an Ultima game. I have no idea what the heck I'm doing c:

Just as the topic says! I want to know if I'm gimped for choosing gargoyle as my first character, and if so, how badly I'm gimped.


I do NOT want answers of 'lol u should've just gone elf or human'
or 'elf or human are best',
and I don't want a response of 'because gargoyles aren't well supported'.  <- Not that because it tells me //nothing//.


Could someone kindly give me a legitimate explanation, and maybe a breakdown or the likes of what I'm missing out on.
One last question: I realize it might be farfetched, but would I be able to make my gargoyle //work//? And by that I mean, would I be able to fairly easily sustain myself even in combat (not PVP) and such once I got proper gargoyle armor and whatnot or the likes?

The main reason - there is not a lot of gear that is gargoyle supported, so some of the """best""" gear will be temporarily out of your reach.

I say temporarily - because I believe you can have the item ID changed to where the item will go from like plate legs to garg legs - so then everything will be in reach and there will be no difference.

TL;DR  - You can make it work, its just a bit more of a challenge.

Ahoy - I agree with Warboss's assessment. As your starter character it will likely be tricky, but with Evolution Dollars you should be able to get going. You can also ask a player crafter to craft you some nice Gargoyle armor and a weapon and add in some of the existing Gargoyle jewelry to get up to speed rather quickly. The latter is the route I took with my Gargoyle and while not my main, I can hold my own in Player vs. Monster (PvM).

I would say for your first experience you would be better off going elf. No reason to make it harder on yourself and have to spend extra $$ to get item IDs changed. Talk to the GMs, they may be able to help you out. There is no benefit to beeing gargoyle starting out other than it looks cool, but lots of negatives.

...I asked for someone to give me a legitimate breakdown and an actual evaluation of what I'm missing out for being gargoyle.
Apparently my post was not well-read, because I didn't get any sort of answer that I actually //needed// :| Though Schuyler's post was kinda helpful :S

I think Warboss and Schuyler gave you the best answer possible. End game armor is not intended to fit your character type. I believe that you will have a hard time finding even a mid-range armor set. So unless you really love fighting earth elementals or intend to be a crafter know that pretty much your only option is to pay millions worth of ED to have items changed to an armor type that can be worn by you. These guys gave you a legitimately helpful answer and you got a message from a GM offering to help in game. Not sure if the attitude was intentional, but it's not necessary.

If Domino hasn't already helped you.  I am sure she was going to give you the option of choosing a new race, other then gargoyle.


 Than again, she might have had other options. I am basing this informed opinion on what staff has done in the past to help others in this situation.

Update: The above info from other players appears to be incorrect. You can have items changed to look like Gargoyle items, but your gargoyle won't be able to wear it.


Dante changed my Mirror shield to a Gargish Order Shield, and it wouldn't let me equip it.  I got the message 'Gargoyles Can't Wear This'. With that said, it would be a cool service to have in the future!

At first glance it would appear that you would be very gimped. I was bored so I made a gargoyle yesterday. Unless there are slots that I'm not seeing available, the ability to layer clothes is not on par with a human or elf. Even with spending evo dollars to convert items to gargish equivalent, it looks like Gargoyles have 3-4 less slots, which presents a serious parity issue currently. I could be wrong, and be missing something. I'll do some more research tonight, and let you know if I find anything out.
